Established in 1901 by American missionaries, it was the first Protestant school to be founded in the country and the oldest American-established university in Asia.  The University is named after Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a retired businessman and philanthropist from Cohoes, New York who gave the initial sum of $10,000 to start the school. For the first half of the 20th century, Silliman was run and operated by Americans.

From Cebu

First Ceres bus trip leaves Cebu at 1:45 am and the last trip departs at 6 pm. On the other hand, the first bus for Cebu from Dumaguete leaves at 3:15 am and the last bus at 2:00 pm. There are several trips in between. The buses to Dumaguete are stationed at the Cebu South Bus Terminal

From Bacolod City

To and from Bacolod Bacolod to Dumaguete: first trip at 2 am and last trip at 7 pm Dumaguete to Bacolod: first trip at 2:30 am last trip at 7:30 pm There are several trips within the day. Fare for a non-airconditioned bus is P232.00/way. Travel time is 5-6 hours.

The travel time takes around half a day. Both cities are located in Negros Island, Bacolod is found at the northwestern corner while Dumaguete is at the southeastern corner. Wide plains at the coast and tall mountain systems at the central parts of Negros Island divide the two cities. The Ceres Bus Line is the most popular and cheapest means of transport to get from Bacolod to Dumaguete or Dumaguete to Bacolod.

Bacolod to Dumaguete via Mabinay – 5 to 7 hours / P250+

Travelers can ride a aircon or non-aircon Ceres Line Bus to Dumaguete at the Southbound Ceres Terminal in Libertad, Bacolod City. The bus crosses over to the Oriental Negros side via Kabankalan and Mabinay, which is a mountainous / high altitude area. The roads are laid out in a zig-zag pattern and there are sections which are unpaved, so it can get very dusty at most times. If you want to take advantage of the nice view in Mabinay, sit at right side of the bus. The whole ride lasts 6-8 hours and the fare is around P250.

This route follows the coastal roads and takes more time than the Bacolod to Dumaguete via Mabinay route. Not recommended.
